The Light for August 22, 2023
By Vaidehi Ravikumar
President Bryant Wallace welcomed members to the meeting and read the Land Acknowledgment.
Thought for the day - Zbig Skiba shared a story about traveling in Europe with a friend, a few decades ago, before smart phones and GPS’s were around. When he and his friend were unsure of where to go, a kind stranger showed them the way. He remembers this incident after all these years and the thought for the day that he shared was “Don’t under-estimate random acts of kindness even if it is as simple as holding the door open for someone."
Announcements
Aimee Resnick shared the following announcement:
"Are you a Northwestern Alumni? Did you study abroad? Did you connect with a Rotary Club in your destination of study? If you answered yes to all three of these questions, send us your testimony! The Northwestern Rotaract Club is jumpstarting the Rotaract Global Scholar Award. Through this program, Northwestern Students will be matched with a Rotary Club in the destination of their study abroad experience. Host Rotary Clubs will serve not only as a networking hub for students, but also as a trusted source for local recommendations, meaningful support, and warm connection during their time abroad. Rotaract Global Scholars will also be recognized at an annual event."
As we work with the Global Learning Office to publicize this incredible opportunity, we are requesting testimonials from Northwestern alumni who interacted with Rotary during their study abroad experience. If you have a story to share, please email it to
aimee.r.resnick@gmail.com along with a photo of you while abroad."
Bill Glader shared an update on the Taste of Evanston (TOE) event coming up on September 17. So far, we have sold 159 tickets and the goal is to sell 500 tickets. He urged everyone to followup on the e-mails that were sent out to our contacts multiple times if necessary. He also reminded members interested in donating to TOE to write a check (preferred method); but we would also go to the TOE Web page and click the DONATE button to donate using our credit cards.
He mentioned that a few of our Rotarians attended the Middle Eastern festival brought to our attention by Ekram. At that event, we were able to promote TOE event while at the same time learning more about the causes supported by the festival.
Bill also thanked
Bruce Baumberger for making
sign-up.com available for volunteer sign up. Please contact Bill or Dan for questions about volunteering.
